The Challenge

The landscape of the Alashan League of Inner Mongolia consists mainly of desert and grassland ecosystems. A large part of the human population is herders. The region’s biodiversity is rich in endemic and rare species but the ecosystems are fragile and the biodiversity resources are under pressure from overgrazing by goats, poaching, unregulated wildlife trade, infrastructure development and from irrigation and overexploitation of groundwater resources. At the same time local capacity, planning and enforcement measures need to be strengthened.
