The Response

The project will support the integration of biodiversity conservation measures into the municipality’s socio-economic development plan (One Circle two Wings – Development Strategy). To do so it will support the development of integrated planning and coordination under the leadership of the City Government and the incorporation of biodiversity conservation measures into local regulations, environmental assessments and government performance appraisal system. The project will further demonstrate sustainable urban development planning, sustainable farming practices for traditional medicinal plants and wetland restoration in key pilot areas.

Project Focus

Ø  Chongqing Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan formulated and endorsed, and its implementation will be started;
Ø  Biodiversity Conservation Criteria will be integrated into Chongqing government officials’ performance appraisal system;
Ø  Chongqing Environmental Regulation and other relevant legislation and planning instruments will be revised to incorporate biodiversity considerations;
Ø  Biodiversity conservation in Daba and Wuling demonstration sites will be improved and main threats will be alleviated;
Ø  Demonstrations of market-based management of urban mountains biodiversity, as well as wetland ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation;

The Challenge

Chongqing Municipality is rich in mountain and wetland biodiversity and is at the same time one of China’s most densely populated areas. The biodiversity is under pressure due to intense urban development, intensive local farming and mismanagement of mountain ranges and wetlands.
